How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies with Do-It-Yourself Traps

Have you ever thought of how to get rid of fruit flies? Fruit flies are disgusting. They often get to your favorite fruits before you do. It can be too frustrating to see them buzzing around your kitchen even if you always do your best to keep it clean.

Fruit flies love damp and moist places like the sink. They also love to get near fruits that are rotting and food that are spoiling. I always make it a point to throw overripe fruits, but these pesky flies always seem to find their way to my fresh fruits.

I have had it with fruit flies always taking over. I tried almost every home remedy trick I could find. Some worked, while some did not.  Here are some of the do-it-yourself traps I tried that worked.

Solution #1: The Vinegar Potion

Most housewives use this trap. It is a tried and tested method. Fruit flies are attracted to the scent of cider vinegar. When they touch the mixture, they won’t be able to fly out because of the dish soap. If you cannot pinpoint where the fruit flies are, you can spread a couple of traps in your home.

What You Will Need:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar, 2 tablespoons
  • Sugar, 1 tablespoon
  • Dish Soap, a few drops
  • Water, 1 liter
  • Containers

What You Need to Do:

1.Thoroughly mix vinegar, sugar, dish soap and water in a container.

2. Position small containers of this vinegar potion around your house.

Solution #2: Eliminate Them with Funnels

The objective of this trap is to make fruit flies pass through a funnel to eventually get to the vinegar at the bottom. The fruit flies will get trapped below because they would not know how to get out through the funnel.

What You Will Need

  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Dish Soap
  • Jar
  • 8 ½” x 11” paper

What You Need to Do

1.Pour vinegar to fill about ¼ of the jar. Add a drop of dish soap. Mix well.

2. Make a funnel with the paper and insert it in the jar.  Make sure the funnel does not touch the mixture.

3.Place jar on your kitchen counter or any fruit fly infested areas of your home.

Solution #3: Get Them Drunk with Red Wine

Almost similar to what a vinegar trap can do, the goal is to attract fruit flies to the smell of red wine. The dish soap is to disallow them to fly.  As soon as they are within the red wine, they will get intoxicated and get drowned. Cheap wine will do for this trap.

What You Will Need

  • A little bit of red wine
  • Dish soap
  • Container
  • Plastic wrap

What You Need to Do

1.Mix wine and dish soap in a container.

2.Place plastic wrap and punch some holes.

3.Place the container in areas where there is a proliferation of fruit flies.

Solution #4: Bewitch Them with Fruits

Fruit flies cannot stay away from fruits, so why not trap them in a jar of fruits?  The fruit flies will definitely be drawn to the jar because they simply love fruits. They will feast on the fruits but will not know how to get out of the jar.

Place the jars in areas of the house where fruit flies often gather. On a sunny day, it would be wise to place a jar outside, near the door.

What You Will Need

  • Overripe fruits
  • Glass jar
  • Plastic Wrap
  • Rubber Band
  • Toothpick
  • Soapy water

What You Need to Do:

1. Place some small pieces of overripe fruits in a jar.

2. Cover with plastic wrap and place some holes on it using a toothpick.

3. When the jar is full of flies, dip it in warm soapy water for 10 minutes.

#5 The Milk, Pepper, and Sugar Trick

This is a trick to get rid of fruit flies that has been used for ages. It originated from New England and has been handed down for generations since 1850. There is no explanation to this but fruit flies get attracted to the mixture. Once they get into contact with it, they suffocate and eventually drown.

What You Will Need

  • Milk, 1 pint
  • Ground Pepper, 2 ounces
  • Raw Sugar, ¼ pound
  • Dish Soap
  • Shallow Containers

What You Need to Do

1. In a saucepan, mix all ingredients, except the dish soap and allow to simmer for 10 minutes.

2. Add a drop of dish soap.

3.Transfer the mixture into shallow containers

#6 It Won’t Kill But…..

Fruit flies will not die with a spray of lemongrass essential oil. However, the mixture will keep them flying away and never to be back. The essential oil will also leave a refreshing smell.  It works for other pests too.

What You Will Need

  • Lemongrass essential oil, 10 drops
  • Hot water, 2 ounces
  • Spray bottle

What You Need to Do

1. Place hot water on a spray bottle and add the lemongrass essential oil. Shake well.

2.Spray on the doorways and windowsills and in all places fruit flies thrive. You can also spray it directly on them.
